The quiet case for gravel
Gravel does three things no other surface manages at the price: it drains as fast as rain falls on it, it needs no planning permission for front-garden drives of any size, and it costs roughly half the next cheapest option. On top of that, the crunch underfoot is a free burglar alarm, and on the right property, the period terraces of Headingley and the village-edge houses towards Meanwood, nothing else looks as natural.

Doing gravel properly
A gravel drive that lasts is a layered build, not a scatter of stone on soil:
- Excavation and sub-base: a compacted MOT Type 1 base, just like any other surface. Skipping it is why cheap gravel drives turn to rutted mud.
- Membrane: a woven geotextile between sub-base and stone keeps the layers separate and suppresses weeds.
- Grids on slopes or heavy-use areas: cellular stabilisation grids stop stone migrating to the low spots and rutting at the wheel tracks.
- Edging: steel, brick or timber edging keeps the stone where it belongs. Without it, gravel creeps onto lawn and pavement.
Stone choice
Angular stones (10 to 20mm) lock together and stay put far better than rounded pea gravel, which rolls and scatters. Warm golden flint blends suit Leeds's older brick; silver-grey granite suits render and modern estates. Expect a top-up of a few bags every couple of years to keep the depth even.
Maintenance reality
Gravel is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance: an occasional rake, a weed or two pulled, a top-up every few years. In return you get a fully permeable surface that will never crack, never puddle, and never need sealing.
